To MBA or not to MBA? Recently, this question has sparked a big debate amongst entrepreneurs, with business incubators and accelerators often being mentioned as alternatives to business school. For the next few months I will share my opinions as to why, for some, business school can be very beneficial for starting a business, just as it was for me starting Flat-Club.

I was/am a U.S. Army Officer and about to be a graduate of the Executive MBA program at London Business School (I am currently in transition out of the active duty Army, but will continue to serve in the reserves in Europe). My new role is as COO of a start-up called Carbon Voyage. Carbon Voyage, itself founded by an Australian/UK veteran, is all about making the transportation industry more efficient by providing a platform to meet extra supply capacity. This the story of how my experience as a military MBA has helped me land a job at a growing startup, including with lessons I learned that can help future military MBAs.

Here is a list of scholarships for some of the distance learning programs listed in the 2012 QS Distance Online MBA Rankings. Not all business schools offer scholarships for online MBA programs, so be sure to ask admissions officers about whether a scholarship can be used toward the MBA program you’re applying for.

Most of the MBA scholarships for African nationals are offered by European business schools, and many are specific to applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa. African MBA applicants also qualify for several school-specific scholarships designed for applicants from developing countries, including the Kofi Annan Fellowship at ESMT.

In addition to more general scholarships, there are international MBA scholarships designed to help international students attend particular schools. While it's a good idea to check scholarship search engines and websites the schools you're interested in, this article will provide some examples of what scholarships are available to international students.

There are a variety of MBA scholarships for international students from the more general scholarship options to scholarships that are specific to a certain MBA program. Here are some resources and scholarships to start with as you look for funding to get your MBA abroad:

You qualify if you have attended the QS World MBA Tour, QS World Executive MBA Tour, QS TopMBA Connect 1-2-1 or the QS World Grad School Tour Fair and completed the survey. Make sure you fill out the survey using as much detail as possible. You will then be taken to a scholarship application page to complete your application and submit an essay. The deadline to apply is January 30, so start learning about the scholarships now while you still have time to apply.
